J. Campbell’s Thoughts On Movements

Whenever I find good material on movements, I intend to pass it on. Committed to building movements everywhere, we can never stop grappling with the issue of movements and movement building.

The following patterns or values of a movement come from Jonathan Campell’s article on the Way of Jesus: Patterns for Movement.

Take some time to wrestle with each of the points and attendant scriptures.

Patterns of a Movement:

Permeation–We intentionally share the Gospel and establish disciple-making communities in the midst of unreached and/or undiscipled people groups (Matt. 28:18-20; Acts 1:8; Rom. 15:14).
Incarnation–We seek group conversions (oikos household evangelism) by sharing the gospel in and through relational networks and cultural systems (Luke 10; Acts 16: 1 Cor. 9:19-23).
Reproduction–We intentionally reproduce in every sphere of church/ministry life: disciples, leaders, churches/ ministries, and teams (Gen 1:22,28; 2 Tim. 2:2; Titus 2:3-8).
Mobilization–We equip and empower every believer to actively participate in fulfilling Christ’s mission for His church in world (Acts 2: 1 Cor. 12; Col. 4:17; Eph. 4; 1 Peter 2).
Teamship–We identify, equip and empower indigenous leaders (i.e. volunteers at each location) to partner together in serving the church/ministry and in starting new churches/ ministries (1 Tim. 3; Acts 4:13, 6:3-7; 13:1-3; 14:23).
Interdependence–We partner with churches, teams, and groups of like faith and mission for mutual edification and mission (Jn 13:34-35; 17:20- 23; Phil 2:1-5)
Tent-making–We affirm tent making (i.e. primarily volunteer based efforts) as the primary pattern for supporting movement building and the required laborers (Acts 1:8; 24; 1 Cor. 4:12; 9:1-18; 2 Cor. 2:17;12:14-18; 1 Thess. 2:9; 2 Thess. 3:71-13).
Holy Spirit–We listen and obey as the Spirit leads us in fulfilling His mission (Zech. 4; 6; Jn 5:19-20; Acts 1:8; Rom. 15:13-19; Gal. 3:3; Eph. 3:16- 21; 1 Thess 1:5; 2 Tim. 1:7).
